Where do we begin. We have had such a wonderful day with Leena. Since our hotel is only a few blocks from BSSK, after breakfast we walked down to BSSK. We spent much of the morning meeting with Mina, one of the directors at BSSK. She went through Leena's paperwork and history with us, and gave us the chance to ask questions. She also gave us a few souvenirs, such as a scrap book of BSSK and the outfit Leena was wearing when she was found.
Mina told us about Leena's hearing tests. When Leena was first tested, her hearing tested with a profound deficit in one ear and a minor loss in the other. Her BSSK caregivers were surprised at this because they hadn't seen any signs of a hearing loss, so they sought a second opinion, which was consistent with the first. In subsequent tests, Leena continued to test positive for a bilateral hearing deficit. Normally, BSSK does not adopt non-special-needs children to families that already have 3 or more children. Since we already have four children, we would have been ineligible. Even if we were eligible, ordinarily Leena would have been adopted by an Indian family because they have higher priority than us. However, because of her diagnosed bilateral hearing deficit, other families declined. Because of this, BSSK was willing to allow her to come to a family with more than 3 children and be approved for an international adoption. Shortly after Leena's final approval was granted by the Indian courts, Leena's hearing was tested again. This time and since, her hearing tested normal, without a deficit. As Mina told us this story she concluded, as we have, that this was God's way of steering Leena to our family.
After our meeting, Mina took us to meet the Director, and then we were ready to meet Leena. Mina took us to the room where the children Leena's age sleep and play. As we walked in, they set Leena down on the floor and she immediately walked across the room and reached for Heather. It was so fun to meet her and hold her. We spent an hour or so with her and her friends there just playing.
Since his adoptive family is likely going to read this, we'll mention that one of the other little boys, Mayur, immediately took a liking to Nate, and would not let us put him down the entire time we were there. He is a cute boy and laughed easily as we played with him. Nate says Mayur is "tight." We interpret that as a compliment.
After playing with Leena and the children, we went with her to see the doctor for a follow-up doctor appointment. BSSK's car was broken, so we took motorized rickshaws across town. It was such a wild ride that I held the video camera out of the window (which really isn't a window, but an open side) to try and capture some of the chaos that is India traffic. After a few minutes, I decided it was better to keep all parts inside.
Upon our return to BSSK, the staff had prepared a lunch of Rice, Dahl, and Potato Masala for us to enjoy. It was delicious, but I was particularly surprised at how much Nate ate, as were the caregivers.
After lunch, it was time for "the Placement." This is a ceremony where they transfer Leena's care to us. They had Nate, Heather and me sit on chairs holding Leena. They lit incense, and one of the caregivers rubbed a red dot onto our foreheads, and then sprinkled rice in our hair. They didn't really explain the symbolism in detail, but it was touching to see how much they love her. Leena had a special closeness with one of her caregivers, Pravma (which means love). It was clear that Pravma will particularly miss Leena too.
After the Placement, we took more pictures and Leena and her caregivers said their goodbyes. Then we left BSSK and walked back to the hotel. We spent the remainder of the afternoon playing with Leena in our room, and we all took a short nap.
We've just finished feeding Leena dinner and a bath before bed time.
It has been so fun to play with her and get to know her. Leena has a "chirp" that she does as she plays, and sounds like a little bird. So far, she really hasn't fussed much, but we expect that will come soon. We're so happy to finally have her with us, and grateful for all of those that have given such loving care to Leena, and the miracles that brought her to us (and us to her).

Okay- So I have checked all day to see what Leena did! I have to live vicariously through you like I did Erin in their adoption. I played tennis tonight and I told my friend your adoption story while we played. Your story made us both cry. So, it was an easy night on the court! I think it is so cute that you get to keep the outfit that they found her in. That is so amazing. I think it would be cool if you named her middle name Pram or whatever her caregivers name was. Mom, Jen and I are having a bet what it was because neither of us can remember. I said Pram, Jen said Pramina and Mom said Pravida. I forgot to check before I started writing. That is if you have decided NOT to name her Leena Michelle Hansen. Hee hee. Nate- you are probably so funny to the caregivers because they probably don't see a lot of American teenage boys. They probably think you are awesome! Hey while you are still there find me a girl to adopt and lets just keep it our secret for now! xoxoM
Pravma! Ha ha ha ha ha That was a combination of all three! I guess we all lost! I think that is a cute middle name. You could add it to Ashiana like I did Joshua Trapper Gillette Woods.....:)
Leena Pravma Ashiana Michelle Hansen!
I am just a happy blogger tonight! I forgot to ask- Did you rub tumeric all over your body like I suggested so you smell more Indian when you met her? ha ha ha ha
wow!!! It doesn't get better than this. I have read this blog about 15 times and I get the chills and cry every time I do. She is absolutely gorgeous and so blessed to have the entire Hansen family in her life. Can't wait to meet her when you get home. Love, Leslie H. P.S. Maybe we could work out a schedule with Eliza staying at our house more often. She was a joy.
I hope everything is going O.K. We are in St. George--- it's Tues. am and Cole, as you can imagine, is sleeping like a rock in his footie pajamas. I am cracking up about Michelle's turmeric comment. Ha Ha Ha! And wishing I could see more photos of Leena. Oh, and if you DID name Leena after Michelle, her monogram (LMH)would match Libby's, which would mean she could borrow some REALLY adorable dresses. But if you name her after me, I will just have a few more dresses monogrammed!!! You can choose the fabric!!! Anyway, we'd all love a few photos. Any time now.
What a precious little girl! It has been such a blessing and privilege to follow her story (I am a *friend* (through her blog) of Leena's Aunt Erin, who is absolutely ga-ga over her!). I look forward to hearing more about Leena and your family.
Buncha questions for you...
first of all, congrats! She is beautiful and what a great first day. I'm sure the grieving will come, but it's wonderful to have such an easy transition to start!
Is Pravma in the picture of your family ceremony? Is she the one in the blue sari? I would love to know, because I have a picture of that lady saying goodbye to Sunshine, but I never got her name. She seemed very fond of him, too.
And who is the lady holding the baby (is that Mayur again?) She looks, um, not Indian. Just curious!
Loving living vicariously through your blog!
Blessings,
sandwich
Sandwich -
I seem to have hijacked Heather's blog, but maybe I can respond to a couple of your questions. Pravma is wearing a white blouse and blue pants (non traditional dress). Next to her, holding Mayur, is a woman who's name I don't recall. However, she told us that she is a volunteer at BSSK since July, and her boyfriend works there.
Kent
Sandwich, I love your questions. I believe grieving has started. She will only go to me most of the time, and she doesn't howl, she just chirps like a baby bird. She is very afraid at certain times, mostly in the Hotel room. When we went to Court, a 2 1/2 hour process, she would not go to the social worker at all. She tried and tried to get Leena to come to her (like 15 times). She would only go to me. She does her baby bird chirp at night with these soulful eyes that I am sure you remember. However, during the day she laughs, wants to give kisses (which is why I have a terrible cold). She loves plying peek-a-boo with Nate. She tries to take off her bow, so I say "No!" and she almost belly laughs she thinks it is so funny to take it off. So we are experiencing all of it. Kent just doesn't write as much about that part. I cna't do it because Leena won't leave my side. I can do it now because it is 4:00 am. The lady in the white shirt and pants and the lady from France are volunteers that come every day. They loved the babies and would shower them with kisses.
xoxoheather
She is BEAUTIFUL! Thank you so much for sharing such a special time in your lives. Of course Leena wants Heather--I find myself, just wanting to jump into Heather's arms all the time! Our family loves you all--hurry home! Love, Trish Thompson
They all grieve differently, but the chirp sounds heartbreaking. This may sound cold, but video her doing it. You'll want to remember it someday when she doesn't do it any more.
Sunshine worked SO hard not to cry once I took him from BSSK and his lip would tremble, but he would suppress it until a little moan would escape. It was VERY sad to watch! Other than that, his grieving would mostly come at bedtime/night when he DIDN'T want me near him and would scoot as far away in the bed as he could.
Good luck with your Delhi processing and smooth travels home!
Blessings,
Sandwich
I can't get enough of this. I am so touched every time I read the blog (about 15 times). I feel of the miracle that has happened every time I read. Thank you for letting me share in this amazing experience. By the way Eliza was a joy and we loved having her. I look forward to your return home and meeting Leena. Leslie
Leena really does look like an angel! She is beautiful and you can tell from the pictures that she belongs with your family. I have loved reading your blog...The pictures and stories are amazing! We are all anxious for you to come home so we can meet Leena! We love you -- travel safely! xo, Alana & family
I was so glad to read that Erin had heard from you and that you are safe. I am praying that you are cloaked in God's protection and that you feel the peace of His presence right now. I am sorry that anything is marring this joyful experience for you.
